Frequently asked questions
It is natural to have questions before beginning therapy.
These are some of the things people often want to know. Anything more personal or specific can be discussed during an initial consultation.
Before you begin
Practical questions, answered clearly.
01How do I know whether psychotherapy is right for me?+
You do not need to be certain before getting in touch. The complimentary introductory call gives us an opportunity to briefly consider what you are looking for, whether psychotherapy may be helpful and whether my way of working feels suitable for you.
02Do you offer an introductory consultation?+
Yes. I offer a complimentary 30-minute introductory consultation by telephone. It is an opportunity to briefly share what has brought you to therapy, ask any initial questions and consider whether working together may feel right. It is not a therapy session, and there is no obligation to continue.
03What happens in the first session?+
I will invite you to talk about what has led you to seek therapy now, what you hope might change and any previous experience of therapy. You can also ask questions. There is no pressure to disclose everything at once.
04How often will we meet?+
Psychotherapy sessions normally take place once a week at the same time. Regularity supports a sense of continuity and allows the work to develop over time.
05How long does therapy last?+
This varies. Some people come for focused, shorter-term work; others choose open-ended psychotherapy to explore longstanding difficulties more deeply. We can discuss this at the outset and review the work together.
06Do I need to know what to talk about?+
No. You can begin with whatever is present, even if that is uncertainty, silence or the feeling that something is hard to explain. Part of the work is finding words and meaning together.
07Is therapy confidential?+
Yes. What you share is treated as confidential, within the professional and legal limits that apply to safe, ethical practice. I discuss my clinical work in supervision without revealing unnecessary identifying information. I will explain confidentiality fully before we begin.
08Can I have sessions online?+
Yes. Online sessions take place via the secure Zoom platform and are available across the UK where this format is suitable. You will need a quiet, private space and a reliable internet connection so that our work can remain confidential and uninterrupted.
09What if I need to cancel?+
Your regular appointment is reserved exclusively for you. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please provide at least 48 hours' notice. Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice, or missed without notice, are charged at the usual session fee.
10Can I contact you between sessions?+
Contact between sessions is generally limited to practical matters such as scheduling. Psychotherapeutic work is held within the session, where there is time and privacy to think safely together.
